Jones Hovercraft 2017-2018 Snowboard Review | The Snowboard Asylum

It’s always difficult finding a place to start when talking about the Hovercraft. Is it for riding piste, or is it for riding pow? Well, if truth be told, it’s both. When Jeremy first came up with the concept of blending a powder focused nose onto a more alpine orientated chassis, everyone knew it was going to rip in the pow. However, little did they realise just how totally mind blowing it was going to be on piste. Fast forward eight years and even amongst the new crop of piste focused boards, the Hovercraft still stands out as the benchmark. Key to its success is that sublime shape. Blending an extended Blunt-Tip profile with a responsive main body derived from carving boards and a freeride focused profile (which combines longer rocker in the nose with poppy camber between the feet and low-rise rocker in the tail), Jones have created a responsive snowboard that delivers effortless float in the deep, combined with a ride on piste that is nothing short of intoxicating.

Now over the years the Hovercraft has continuously evolved and this is nowhere more obvious than in the ground-breaking Spoon 4.0 nose and tail. This features a 3-D spoon profile in the nose which creates additional lift, but more importantly it delivers a smoother transition between turns, making the Hovercraft feel almost effortless to ride. Add to this the progressive mellow Magne-Traction sidecut and what you get is a board that is not only effortless it’s also a rock solid through the turn. But don’t forget that square tail, that thing blasts you out the turn making this board so much fun to ride.

It’s not just the shape that’s evolved over the years, internally Jones have tweaked the Hovercraft’s construction ensuring that it continues to stay at the top of its game. Heading up its high-quality construction is the Classic Core, this premium Slovenian poplar wood core delivers the perfect balance of flex, pop and power and creates the optimum riding characteristics. Match this with the softer flexing Bi-Ax fibreglass structural layers and bamboo veneer top sheet and what you get is a responsive yet playful ride that will make you re-evaluate your whole snowboarding. Finally, to ensure that you’re the fastest rider out there, Jones fit the Hovercraft with a superfast sintered 7000 base.
