Bataleon Surfer ES 2017-2018 Snowboard Review | The Snowboard Asylum

Every so often a new board comes along that redefines everything that you think is the norm. A board that is so far ahead of the curve that even other manufacturers stand and stare in awe. Well, Bataleon’s new Surfer ES is just such a board. Taking the industry trade shows by storm, this was the board to strap to your feet for the 17/18 on snow demos. No matter where you were it was almost impossible to get one of these, they were always out. So, what is it? Well, it’s obviously all in the name. Aimed at riders who are looking for the ultimate in off piste performance, this stunning state of the art directional 3BT powder board delivers unrivalled performance in the pow. But, the Surfer ES is so much more than that, everybody that rode the board on the tests (and it was a lot of people) came back absolutely raving about how it performed out on the rest of the mountain.

Now, when you first set eyes on the Surfer, you’ll want one, it really does look that good. However, that stunning shape is more than just about aesthetics. Described by the factory as the most complex shaped snowboard they’ve ever built, the Surfers directional swallow profile has been designed with a no compromise attitude. With a large powder nose and short swallow tail utilising Bataleon’s Pow 3BT profile with the new Sidekick technology, this unique shape combines a narrow centre base section with wider, longer and higher side base upturns at the nose. This gives unrivalled float at the front end, whilst the added upturn of the Sidekicks gives lightning fast turn engagement. At the tail the shorter and less pronounced side base upturns are integrated into the swallow tail sections giving the board stunning response when steering off the back of the board in the pow or when driving out of turns on groomers. This is all matched with a mellow traditional camber profile to step up control and response and to give the board that added stability at speed that you only really get with camber.

Internally Bataleon really don’t hold back when it comes to what’s inside the Surfer, and that’s one of the reasons why it performs so well even away from the backcountry. Heading up the high-end ES construction is the Very Light Core. Combining poplar and paulownia to create a featherweight backbone for the board, it delivers the perfect balance of weight, strength and durability. This is then reinforced with Bataleon’s exclusive Tri-Ax + structural layers. These create a powerful torsional flex to really power up the board. In addition, carbon stringers running from under the insets out to the contact points at both the tip and tail step up that power another notch and give the Surfer ES its mind blowing ride. Finally, the Nano High Speed Base (The fastest base on the market) finishes of this game changing snowboard perfectly.
